According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the United States has approximately 1.6 million veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts alone – 21% of whom suffer from a service-connected disability. That statistic comes out to more than 300,000 people dealing with a new disability as they enter into their post-combat lives, many of whom could benefit from the help of a service dog.

Returning military personnel face a myriad of challenges from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) to immobility. This can make the transition back to civilian life difficult. However, service dogs that have specially-trained to help perform a multitude of tasks can be a vital asset to increasing the independence of their human partners. When a person is paired with a service dog, they show significant improvements psychologically, socially – even economically. This Veterans Day, as the nation honors its servicemen and women, Three Dog Bakery and man’s best friend will be doing their part by providing military veterans with service dogs.
